Bergamo, Città Alta

Located in the alpine Lombardy region of northern Italy, Bergamo has a beautiful and unique old medieval core, the Città Alta («Upper Town»), nestled in the hills. The larger modern town expands the plains below. The old town is completely enclosed by 16th century Venetian fortifications and is characterised by cobblestone streets and the span of one thousand years of architecture.

Bergamo is often referred to as Città dei Mille («City of the Thousand») as a significant portion of Giuseppe Garibaldi’s troops for his 1860 Expedition of the Thousand against the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies came from Bergamo.
