Cimitero Monumentale di Milano

In the northeast of Milan's bustling city, not far from Piazza Garibaldi, lies the Cimitero Monumentale di Milano, the monumental cemetery of Milan, Italy. In 1860, the architect Carlo Maciachini (1818-1899) won the tender for the new central cemetery of Milan and subsequently created one of Italy’s most opulent cemeteries. It was opened in 1866 and extends over 18 hectares. Over time, the cemetery was continuously expanded: Today, it’s an open-air museum stretching over an area of 25 hectares with numerous extraordinary statues, obelisks and temples.
