Sihlfeld Cemetery
The cemetery Sihlfeld in Zurich Wiedikon, Switzerland, was opened in 1877 and extended in several stages between 1896 and 1964. Nowadays it is the largest cemetery and park of the city of Zurich with 29 hectares. The cemetery (today Sihlfeld A) was planned by municipal architect Arnold Geiser, who was inspired by the Vienna Central Cemetery. It was created because of the revision of the Federal Constitution in 1874, since then the municipalities are responsible for the funeral services instead of the parishes.
There are two former crematoria on its grounds: The crematorium built in 1889 in Sihlfeld A, the oldest in Switzerland, and its successor, the crematorium in Sihlfeld D, which was in operation until 1992. As the first central cemetery in Zurich, it was open to all residents regardless of status and religion.
