The Caves

These caves were created by quarrying for sandstone in the 18th century. They were heavily excavated until the quarry broke through to the other side of the hill. The material was used mainly for flooring and oven tiling in the surrounding houses. It is believed that the caves were once inhabited for some time after the abandonment of the quarrying.
